Notes
on the 2 versions (1936 and 1949) of Lacan’s Mirror Stage paper.
The1936 Mirror Stage paper,
was first presented by Jacques Lacan on June 16 1936 at the French
Psychoanalytic Society [see the notes of Françoise Dolto below] ,
finalized on July 20th, 1936, and then presented at the 14th IPA
conference at Marienbad at 3:40 PM on August 3rd 1936. He never
presented the written text to the IPA. He later claimed that he lost it.
The version
presented at the 16th IPA conference on July 17th 1949 in Zürich and
was published in Revue français de psychanalyse no.4 Oct-Dec
1949 and later published in 1966 in the Écrits, pages 93-100
What
happened between 1936 and 1949? The title of the paper changed.

of the ‘I’
The
shifts are from ‘structuring and genetic moment’ to ‘formative structuring’ and
from ‘of the constitution
reality’ to ‘ the Function of the I’.
Between
1936 and 1949, there is a series of articles referring to his findings:

But in
the 1949 Mirror Stage paper, the ‘je’ is something
he articulated
in 1945, in his “Logical Time and the Assertion of Anticipated Certainty”
The
name changed— due to his development of the articulation of the Mirror Stage
related to the notion of time and psychic causality.
In
other words, in order to arrive from the 1936 developmental theory of the
mirror stage to the 1949 structural theory of the mirror stage, Lacan had to
pass through the two papers: Logical Time and On Psychic Causality.
De ce texte, nous possédons pourtant deux traces : les notes prises par
Françoise Dolto au cours d’une conférence préliminaire donnée par Lacan à la
SPP, le 16 juin 1936. Elles reflètent sans aucun doute avec fidélité
l’archive introuvable de 1936. La deuxième trace est un projet d’essai rédigé
par Alexandre Kojève auquel Lacan devait participer à l’été 1936, et qui ne
verra pas le jour. (Elisabeth Roudinesco)

Of
this text, however, we have two traces: the notes taken by Francoise Dolto
during a preliminary conference given by Lacan to the SPP, on June 16, 1936.
They undoubtedly reflect with fidelity the 1936 untraceable archive. The second
trace is a draft essay written by Alexandre Kojève to which Lacan was to
participate in the summer of 1936, and which will not see the light of day.

La théorie du moi est ce qu’il y a de –
poussé dans le théorie psych., c’est reconnu par Freud lui-même. Quand on s’attaque à
ce sujet très résistant par
lui-même, des résistances bien compréhensives s’élèvant. Ce sera de la métaphysique, pas de
données cliniques.
Exposé de conceptions des pulsions du moi seulement. Pratique et
réflexions sur les psychoses nous pourtent aux observations profondes du moi.

The theory of the ego is what is the
[least]--- explored in psych. theory, it’s recognized by Freud himself. When
one has a go at this subject, which is very resistant in itself, very
comprehensive resistances arise. It will be metaphysics, no clinical data.
An exposé of conceptions of the drives
of the ego only. Practice and reflections on the psychoses carry us to deep
observations of the ego.

if it were so simple. Freud himself said there were cert. of his drives which
went against the élan vital. Even to say “death instincts”.
